26 species of native fish continue to thrive in the vast waters of Lake Argyle.
Originally around 350 freshwater crocodiles lived in a few waterholes in the Ord River and now their population is roughly estimated to be approximately 35,000!
The area is rich in minerals with deposits of uranium, gold, copper and the richest deposit of diamonds in the world!
With one of the fastest flowing rivers in Australia during the wet season, the rich fertile soils, the East Kimberley boasted all the dynamics for a successful irrigation scheme.
Kununurra forms the hub around which the Ord River Irrigation Project revolves. Centred in the Eastern Kimberley, the area not only provides incomparable tourist attractions, but a massive intensive agricultural development, made possible by the construction of the two dams.
Every year between February and March, the Kimberley plays host to a stunning natural display like nowhere else on earth. The annual rainfall turns landmarks and riverbeds into show stopping phenomena that need to be seen to be believed.
