About Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain, located in the heart of Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area, is a region rich in history and natural beauty, making it a captivating destination for travellers of all ages. The area has been shaped by glacial erosion over millions of years, resulting in stunning landscapes that include ancient rainforests, alpine moorlands, and glacial lakes.
The region holds significant cultural heritage, with Tasmanian Aboriginal people having lived in the area for over 35,000 years. They utilised the land for hunting and gathering, leaving behind a rich tapestry of cultural sites. European exploration began in the early 19th century, with the area eventually being declared a national park in 1922, thanks to the efforts of conservationists like Gustav Weindorfer, who envisioned it as a park "for the people for all time".
Today, Cradle Mountain is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including the iconic Tasmanian devil, and offers a range of activities from leisurely walks to the challenging Overland Track. Visitors can explore the dramatic vistas of Dove Lake, the enchanting Ballroom Forest, and the historic Waldheim Chalet.
