Where to Go to Weather Out the End of Winter

Winter is almost over for another year but we still have 5 weeks of cold left to endure. Depending where you’re living, that can seem like a lifetime. So we’ve put together the best places to travel to weather out the end of winter.

Embrace the snow in Jindabyne

The best way to celebrate winter is to get active and warm up in the snow. Jindabyne is the gateway township for the Kosciuszko National Park and alpine ski country which makes it the ideal base for skiers ready to tear up the slopes. And when you’ve had a hard day skiing, nestle into your deluxe cabin and warm up next to your very own fireplace.

Migrate with the whales to Hervey Bay

Holiday like a Humpback whale and escape the cold to Hervey Bay. The whales have arrived in the calm waters between Hervey Bay and Fraser Island where they will reside until early November. These majestic humpbacks use the sheltered water as a whale creche in the cooler months as protective mums bring their young up the coast to the warmer waters to teach them how to be grownups in the safe harbour.

Relax in Byron Bay

Winter can be a time of year that just makes you want to curl up under the doona and not come out till Spring but in Byron Bay you can relax sans quilt. Byron Bay truly is unlike anywhere in the world, with awe-inspiring natural beauty and a vibrant welcoming community. Byron is synonymous with a laid back, relaxed lifestyle where you can get back to nature with all the creature comforts you could want.  If you’re feeling active take a walk to Byron Bay lighthouse at Cape Byron, Australia’s easternmost point or try your hand at surfing at the family-friendly Main Beach, Clarke and Wategos Beaches which are great for beginner surfers.

Chase the sun in Airlie Beach

The gateway to the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef, Airlie Beach is the relaxed resort town that winter escapers need. While for some of us down South it’s hard to believe that you could enjoy weather warm enough to entice you to dip your toe into a pool or ocean in late July but in Airlie Beach that’s exactly what you’ll want to do. in Bask in the mid 20-degree sunshine as you lay around the lagoon or take a day trip out to Whitehaven beach and swim in the crystal clear water.
