Here’s our guide to get you out and about in the fresh Jindabyne air and sunshine.
CYCLE
Start your holiday adventure at Discovery Parks – Jindabyne on four-wheels and, once in region, hit the road on a two-wheeler to really explore. There’s plenty of bike trails for the lycra-cycling enthusiast, the adrenaline mountain biker or the leisure rider. Get on the right track with our ride recommendations:
Beginner, intermediate and advanced riders can go to the extreme with a day-out at Thredbo Mountain Bike Park. With heaps of world-class trails, mountain bikers can enjoy their preferred level of adrenaline rush riding a downhill steep drop or steady gradient.
With quality road surfaces and a light traffic load, the Snowy Mountain region is extremely safe for road cycling. Enjoy the sight of a breathtaking landscape with an easy-going ride along the Lake Jindabyne Foreshore Trail. This ride starts at our holiday park and is a 7km ride along a concrete track.
Bring your own bike or hire a pedal from Snowline Sports – which is conveniently located next door to Discovery Parks – Jindabyne.
FISH
Lake Jindabyne is half the size of Sydney Harbour (whoa!) and also the gorgeous aquatic focal point of this region. With lots of water-based activities on offer, Atlantic salmon and trout fishing is one of the most popular summer activities in this region.
Fish your way and enjoy the tranquillity by hiring a motorboat from Discovery Parks – Jindabyne. Our holiday park has half cab and open boat options stating at $95 for 2-hour charters*. Sit back, relax and wait for the fish to bite - hopefully you’ll return to park with an esky full and ready for a BBQ dinner in the Camp Kitchen.
Or, let the experts guide you with an early morning fishing charter - boat and tackle supplied. Steve Williamsons’ Trout Fishing Adventures will take you on a personalised tour to top secret fishing spots and divulge classified angling information, you’ll be guaranteed a productive troll with bites aplenty!
*Hire is subject to weather conditions. You must have a full Australian driver licence to hire all watercraft and have an Australian mobile telephone in case of emergencies. Please check with Park Reception after 9am daily.
Please note: Anglers must carry a recreational fishing licence which is available from most service stations and tackle shops in the region as well as the AFMA website.
HIKE
Take in that fresh mountain air and the great outdoors on foot. Jindabyne has an intertwined network of walking trails for all ages and abilities.
Climb every mountain, but first, take the chairlift at Thredbo to the top of Mount Kosciuszko, as the Kosciuszko Walk starts here. Stand on top of Australia’s highest mountain and capture the ultimate selfie from the 2km walk to Kosciuszko Lookout.
Want to get your step count up without having to conquer the hilly terrain? Enjoy a leisurely round of golf at the Thredbo Golf Club. You’ll still get all the spectacular views of the Thredbo Valley and its surrounding Alpine peaks, just without all the excess huffing and puffing.
For a different view, head underground into the depths of the Yarrangobilly Caves for a guided or self-guided walking tour. Sturdy enclosed shoes are a must to navigate this limestone wonder filled with stalagmites, stalactites and cave coral.
HORSE RIDE
Don your Akubra and Driza-Bone and ride like the “The Man From Snowy River” in Kosciuszko National Park. Ok, so, we’ve probably gone a bit too far there but, we guarantee you’ll feel like a true-blue Aussie drover riding horseback through the most picturesque plains and valleys. As an experienced local guide chaperons you through Australia’s high country, you’ll most likely catch a glimpse of a pack of wild brumby horses and, oh and ah at the stunning backdrop of Lake Jindabyne.
TASTE LOCAL FOOD & WINE
If you’re not keen on fishing for your dinner, there are plenty of local food options. Choose from table-serviced restaurants or cheap & cheerful eats.
- Soak up the sun in the rooftop beer garden at Squires Cocktail Bar & Bistro. Enjoy a pub-style meal or cheese-platter accompanied by a local vino or brew.
- For a more casual option, head to Trader Joe's Garage - Cafe. Conveniently located next door to Discovery Parks - Jindabyne, this cafe has the best toasties and coffee but, for a real treat, have the Hawaiian Burger – how summer is that!
- For a quick bite, you can’t go past a local country-style bakery and The Sundance Bakehouse is THE local pick for cake, coffee and their famous meat pie.
Gin is the drink of the season and Wildbrumby Schnapps is an award-winning distiller of schnapps, vodka and gin. Head to their distillery door for a free tasting or to purchase from their range of Snowy mountain spirits, stop for a continental lunch at their café and walk it all off with a stroll in their sculpture garden with works from local artists.
