A short history of 'Putt-Putt'
Although the Scottish are credited with inventing putting in the late 1800s, (along with the longer format of the game in the 15th century at St. Andrews) it wasn’t until the early 1950s, that an American insurance executive, Don Clayton, popularised what we know as mini-golf today.
Seizing an opportunity to shake things up, he added a new twist to what was already a popular pastime by designing short holes that allowed skillful players to score hole-in-ones off guard rails and through mechanical obstacles! ‘Our product’s very simple.’ he said in 1994. ‘We sell happiness.’
Clayton eventually built Putt-Putt Golf and Games into a multimillion-dollar industry with hundreds of courses around the world. Today there are a variety of organisations offering huge money to the winners of large tournaments, particualrly in the US, and a bi-annual world championship tours the globe!
