Best bike tracks in Dubbo and the Margaret River

We’ve cycled two of the best bike tracks in Dubbo and the Margaret River region and give you the breakdown of how long it will take and where you should stop off on the way.

Margaret River Ride

Celebrated for its fantastic wines, culinary experiences, megafauna fossils and world-class surf, Margaret River boasts pristine natural scenery. It’s even home to some of the world’s tallest hardwood trees. What better way to explore the lush forests and tranquil rivers than on two wheels with your hair blowing in the breeze? If you don’t have a bicycle of your own, you can hire one from Life Cycle Bikes.

Once your sunscreen and water bottles are sorted, jump on your bike and pedal five minutes down the Bussell Highway to the Margaret River Bakery. Pack yourself a pastry-charged picnic for the ride and you’re ready to roll. Another two minutes and you’ve arrived at Rotary Park, where your cycling adventure truly begins. Named after a stream that was dammed in the 90s to provide water to a growing township, the 10 Mile Brooke Dam Trail will take you on a seriously gorgeous journey. It’s a safe and easy route, only 15km in length, so the whole family can enjoy zooming down trails cocooned in foliage, cheered on by the sound of birdcalls and trickling rivers.

Ride to the end of the trail to decide on the best spot for your pastry feast, or use the picnic area equipped with benches, a BBQ, and toilets. On your way back through the township, stop off at Settlers Tavern for a well-deserved pub feed.

Discover Dubbo on a Bike

Meandering past Discovery Parks - Dubbo, the Tracker Riley Cycleway is an unmissable route to see the sights of Dubbo. Named after an indigenous legend, Alec ‘Tracker’ Riley, the track guides you around the banks of the Macquarie River and down towards the Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

You can choose to explore the entire 12.5km stretch, or select smaller loops.

A four-minute drive or an eight-minute bike ride to the bridge near Chifley Drive will bring you to the northernmost part of the trail. From here, Dubbo is your oyster.

Discover the wide open spaces, thick towering gums and undulating lawns, all begging for a picnic stop of course. While cycling past the glistening bodies of water and natural landscapes of Dubbo is peacefully rewarding, you can head straight to Taronga Western Plains Zoo and hire bikes from there directly if you prefer. This is a great option as a simple ride around the zoo with the kids. Either way, you can’t skip the path that runs through this popular attraction. Explore the Galapagos Archipelago and the pride lands of Africa, all without leaving Dubbo (or the seat of your bike). Pack a picnic of goodies in your backpack to avoid tourist prices at the zoo and devour it somewhere lovely on your ride home, swinging past the historic Dundullimal Homestead for a poke around the oldest open building in Dubbo.
