Family play dates in South Australia
There is endless amounts of fun to be had for the whole family at our 9 Discovery Parks locations across SA. We’ve asked our Park Staff to recommend some of the best things to pass the time while holidaying in region. Here’s their list of free and inexpensive activities to keep the kids amused and mum and dad’s wallet happy.
TOUR TO DISCOVERY PARKS - BAROSSA VALLEY
What is the best thing to do in your park?
“There’s plenty of space to ride bikes, scooters and pedal karts, you can get your daily exercise on the jumping pillow and, don’t forget about the waterpark and swimming pool”. You definitely won’t need to pack any fun, as you’ll have a ball with Park Manager Jacky and that list of awesome in-park activities. There is bike hire available at Park Reception and the resort-style lagoon pool is heated so you can dive in all-year round.
What is the best thing to do in the Barossa Valley region?
Jacky’s suggestions prove that variety is the spice of life when it comes to all the different things you can do in her region. You can spend big and “take a hot air balloon ride over the beautiful Barossa but this can cost from $240 to $300” or, you can spend a lot less with a competitive family day out at Barossa Bowland and Mini Golf complete with wood-oven pizza lunch. Of course, a trip to the Barossa wouldn’t be right without wine. Jacky says “relax with a visit to a cellar door, sit by their fire place and taste wines” but, don’t forget about the kids, stop off at the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company so they can do some sampling of their own.
What is the best free thing to do in the Barossa Valley?
There is something to do morning, noon and night in the Barossa. Jacky’s suggestions see you start your day with “an early morning bike ride on The Barossa Trail”, followed by a “stroll up and down the main street of Tanunda, where there are plenty of retailers and window shopping”, and end with a “visit to Mengler's Hill Lookout at sunset with a picnic of your favourite Barossa purchases!”.
LIVE IT UP AT DISCOVERY PARKS - LAKE BONNEY
What is the best thing to do in your park?
Park Manager Andy says you’ll have a splashtacular family holiday with all the water activities on offer. The park has hire equipment which includes kayaks and water trikes so you can get out and explore the lake or, make the most of the winter sun and splash down in the waterpark.
What is the best thing to do in the Riverland region?
With the fam in tow, choose your own adventure and cruise the mighty Murray River. The region has heaps of tour options available so you can jump on board a captained boat or self-explore by dinghy or kayak. Just ask Andy at Park Reception for his local tour operator recommendations.
What is the best free thing to do in the Riverland?
Monash Adventure Park is a great day out for the family and Andy says “it’s one of the most popular Riverland attractions with flying foxes, leaning towers, rope bridges and a maze, there is heaps to play on, climb and explore”.
ROAD TRIP TO DISCOVERY PARKS - ROBE
What is the best thing to do in your park?
“Our adventure playground is the place to be and you can have hours of fun climbing, swinging and racing each other on the flying fox”, says Park Manager Helen. But, don’t under-estimate cozying up on a winter’s day inside your cabin with a good book or taking a dip in the indoor heated pool.
What is the best thing to do on the Limestone Coast?
If you’re a family of thrill-seekers, Helen suggests a 4WD tour over Robe’s back beaches or a joy flight in a vintage Tiger Moth plane to get a bird’s eye view of Robe. But, if you’re a foodie family, you must taste-test coffee and sweet treat at The Pastry Place or camel milk ice cream and shakes at Humpalicious Camel Farm.
What is the best free thing to do on the Limestone Coast?
It’s no surprise that Helen’s suggested activities revolve around the beach and sea; “take a stroll along Long Beach where you might just find some stunning shells, walk the rugged coastline of West Beach, watch the cray boats come into the marina and see them unload their catch or, fish on the wharf at Robe jetty or bream lakes”.
