There’s something about river holidays and the Echuca-Moama region on the NSW and VIC border is one of our favourite places!
We asked the team at Discovery Parks – Maidens Inn, Moama for their best recommendations of things to see and do in the local area. Whether you’re spending your days enjoying the mighty Murray River, or taking in the region’s rich history, great food and drink experiences, and unique local charm, one thing’s for sure: Moama is an essential stop for your next river holiday!
Explore by Pontoon Boat
Book one of the pontoon boats from the park at Maidens Inn for a day on the water. Each boat holds up to 12 guests and we suggest booking for a whole day to make the most of your time on the river. Our favourite trip is to travel up to Cape Horn Winery where you can sit by the Murray River and watch the world go by with one of Cape Horn’s yummy woodfire pizzas and their local wines.
Sample Local Gin at Echuca Distillery
The recently opened Echuca Distillery is a must visit for tourists to the Echuca-Moama region. Enjoy locally brewed gin together with an all-day breakfast. You can even book in a ‘gin and beer trail’ experience that incorporates a paddle steamer trip, a stop at Morrisons Winery to try either their beer or cider, and sampling gin at the distillery.
Summer Fun at Aqua Island
Situated just outside Moama is our region’s latest attraction, Aqua Island. The kids will love the inflatable obstacle course while parents can either join in or relax with a cool drink under the shade.
Visit Cactus Country
Visiting Cactus Country is a unique local experience like no other. Set on 12 acres Cactus Country has thousands of cacti and an awesome Mexican style café.
Spend your Morning Stand-Up Paddle Boarding
What a great way to start your morning off in Echuca/Moama! Cruise down the river for about an hour, suitable for beginners through to advanced boarders. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head to one of the many cafes for a great coffee and breakfast.
Get Spooky with an After Dark Tour
Located down at the Discovery Centre Echuca, After Dark Tours guide you through the historic port of Echuca where you’ll learn a spot of local history and hear tales of murder and betrayal. You might even see a lost soul!
Visit the Famous Great Aussie Beer Shed
The Great Aussie Beer Shed one of the most interesting and unique attractions in Echuca/-Moama. Just 3km from the centre of town the Shed is an unbelievable display of Aussie Icon paraphernalia. We recommend booking a tour with the owner, Neil, who’s a local character and full of info.
Have Lunch with a View at Timber Cutters
Our pick for lunch with a view is Timber Cutters, a café/bar overlooking the junction of the Murray and Edwards Rivers just 35 minutes away in Mathoura. While you’re nearby, head out to explore world heritage listed Barmah National Park or book a river cruise with Kingfisher Cruises.
Walk the Tongala Wall Art Trail
Tongala is a 30-minute drive from Echuca and well worth the trip, with over 40 incredible street art murals dotted throughout this small farming town. Walk and explore the works of local artists who have donated their own time and talent to brighten the buildings and streets.
Visit Kyabram Fauna Park
Nature lovers big and small will love a trip out to Kyabram Fauna Park, home to over 500 native animals including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus and a huge range of native reptiles. They often have free animal encounters, and our team highly recommends a visit!
In a region bursting with unique experiences and inviting local culture, there’s something for everyone to see, do and explore in Echuca-Moama.
