The Grampians: TOP Hikes, Wine & Accommodation

8 Mar 2018

Wine, food and hiking - three of our favourite things. You can find them all in the Grampians, Victoria.

Just south of Grampians National Park is the Henty wine region of Australia, known for its cool climate pinots and dessert wines. If you’re not staying long and you want to be sure of a tasting, head to Pierrepoint Wines as their cellar door’s open seven days a week.

Close to Pierrepoint Wines is Lake Hamilton Motor Village & Caravan Park, which is a TOP place to stay in the heart of Hamilton, Victoria. With self-contained cabins and sites, there’s accommodation to suit singles, couples and families. This park has over 200 ornamental flowering trees, providing shade, privacy and ambiance. There’s a free BBQ - an Aussie getaway essential - and it’s only a short stroll to the Hamilton city centre for shops and restaurants.

Take a dip in the solar-heated pool, fish the lake’s stocks of trout, redfin and tench, or play table tennis in the games room. There’s something for the whole family.

Now, to the hiking.

Mount Abrupt
This is a good hike to do if you;re based around Dunkeld and Hamilton. The guides say it’s a three-hour round trip, but if you’re fit and fast you could do it in two.

Local tip: when you put Mount Abrupt into Google Maps, you may need to drive further than where it indicates, then access the car park via the road on the right. Park and cross the highway on foot. The trail begins up some stone steps from the road. It's pretty steep, with loose rubble and rocks, so it’s not a beginner walk.

When you're done, head over to Cafe Catalpa in Tarrington for a delicious lunch - we recommend the barramundi and seafood risotto - and a couple of cheeky dessert slices!

Mount Rosea
Looking for hikes around Hall’s Gap? The guides say Mount Rosea is a five-hour round trip. But if you could wake up when the rooster crows, then you can finish it in a morning.

The car park is easy to find. Put Mount Rosea car park into your GPS and it should take you straight there on a one-way road from Hall's Gap. Once parked, look for the signpost for the trail on the left.

The track begins as a pleasant walk through forest. After a while, it transforms into a landscape of smooth boulders. Every time you round a corner, you're faced with a more spectacular view than the last. Hands down, Mount Rosea offers one of the most breathtaking views in the Grampians.

There are two Top Parks nearby: Lake Fyans Holiday Park and Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park. The first is located beside Lake Fyans, a short drive away from Hall’s Gap. If a long day of hiking has left you weary, the park has a licensed bistro on site for your evening meal. Fresh, local food and wine is served several days a week, plus take-away fish & chips on Fridays.

Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park is nestled beside Lake Bellfield and offers a camp lounge with an open log fire. You can even dip your toes into their outdoor wood fire-heated pool, open all year-round. There’s also a little shop on site, with locally made gifts, ice cream, milk, bacon, eggs, wood, beer and wine.

With fishing, wildflowers, cycling, day spas, wineries, art galleries, woodworks, golf, olive groves, restaurants and cafés nearby, the Grampians is the ultimate holiday destination.
