5 Camping Pizza Ideas

5 Sep 2017

The magic of pizza: best when eaten fresh out of the oven, and unbelievably delicious after a night spent in the fridge. We don't know why - just the laws of the universe!

It covers the basics: vegetables, cheese, bread, and contentment. But we don't always turn to pizza because it's the light of our lives. It's easy, cheap, and great for families and groups. When we're cooking dinner in the camp kitchen or in a cabin, we make sure that one of the nights includes the most perfect combination of pepperoni and cheese.

HOW TO MAKE PIZZA SAUCE

All eaters have a preference for how to dress up their pizza. The sauce, for some, is the vital element of making a pizza a real pizza, and not just an open sandwich. If you're looking to make your own pizza sauce, this 15-minute recipe from Bowl of Delicious is easy to whip up. Want a bit of bite? Add chili flakes to the mix.

What you will need:

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
¼ cup red wine
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 small can tomato paste
1 tablespoon honey or sugar
1 teaspoon each of oregano, basil, and thyme (or 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning)
salt and pepper, to taste

HOW TO PRETTY THE PIZZA

THE SALSA DANCE

Salsa Dance

Layers from top to bottom:

Shredded cheese
Corn chips
Salsa
Corn
Spinach
Taco seasoning
Pizza sauce
Refried beans
Pizza dough

You have to do a little salsa dance every time you have a mouthful. You'll be so excited by the corn chips, you won't be able to stop yourself from doing it (and stealing another slice). We recommend using shredded cheddar cheese over the top. We won't beat around the bush: this is basically nachos on pizza. You are very welcome, ma'am/sir.

MY BIG FAT GREEK PIZZA

Big Fat Greek Pizza

Layers from top to bottom:

Feta cheese
Olives
Artichokes
Spinach
Red onion
Pizza sauce
Pizza dough

You feta believe you'll love this pizza. We choose kalamata olives to top it (mmm, salt) and marinated artichokes. Looking for a little crunch? Slice red capsicum and sprinkle it all over.

THE CHICK-ANTÉ!

Chickante

Layers from top to bottom:

Shredded Swiss
Red capsicum
Jalapeno
Black pepper
Chicken
Pizza sauce
Pizza dough

Some like it hot. If you have more time and fancy yourself a chef extraordinaire, The Chick-ante! is worth the effort. Throw strips of boneless chicken breast onto the fry pan and let it cook in olive oil on low for 10 minutes. Once just golden, add it to the pizza with jalapenos and lime for zest - then into the oven it goes. Which cheese, you ask? Swiss.

NO MOO FOR YOU

No Moo For You

Layers from top to bottom:

Salt
Green capsicum
Zucchini
Spinach
Mushroom
Pizza sauce
Pizza dough

We've been talking too much about cheese, sorry. We didn't forget about you. Know someone lactose intolerant or just doesn't eat the stuff? Keep pizza on the brain. Basically a salad (except for the giant, round piece of bread underneath) and covered in all the veggies you love, the No Moo For You wins the hearts of everyone - even the meat lovers.

HAVE ANOTHER LITTLE PIZZA MY HEART NOW, BABY

Take it!

Pizza My Heart

Layers from top to bottom:

Pepperoni
Parmesan
Shredded mozzarella
Black pepper
Pizza sauce
Pizza dough

Get back to basics and choose this classic. You can't go wrong with your run-of-the-mill pepperoni pizza. For the fanatics of the stinky stuff, you get double the cheese on this round. The parmesan is the piece de resistance and more for show, but the mozzarella is the one holding the fort together. Cheese is a gift, embrace it. Don't hold back, never hold back.

HOW TO BAKE THE PIZZA

Set the oven to 230°C. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until crust is golden and the cheese has melted.

HOW TO EAT THE PIZZA

Smell the rising aromas, open your mouth wide and savour that first beautiful bite.
