Updated July 2021

How satisfying is biting into a freshly baked pie straight out of the oven or a custard-filled tart just out of the fridge? The comforting feeling of handmade food is exactly what we look for on a cold winter's day.

Bakeries across Australia are delivering exactly this by serving up mouth-watering meat pies, cheesecakes, scrolls, macarons and we can't go on anymore - we're too hungry!

Check out our top bakery picks for your next big road trip.

GEELONG: The Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes

Since 1997, this family-operated business has been churning out prize-winning pastries and baked goods. Taking out titles for Australia's Best Gourmet Pie in 2016 and Australia's Best Pie in 2013, The Rolling Pin in Geelong has pie-making down to an art form. Making everything from gourmet chicken carbonara pies to the great Australian lamington, this award-winning bakery will not let you down.

Our pick? The Country Lamb & Rosemary Pie (judged Australia's Best Gourmet Pie).

APOLLO BAY: Apollo Bay Bakery

Famous for its 'Great Ocean Road Scallop Pie', this bakery is also well-known for its line-ups of hungry road-trippers eager for a feed on the way to the world-famous 12 Apostles National Marine Park. Offering a range of hand-made pies, pasties and sausage rolls, they also bake the best sourdough loaves from their very own strain of wild yeast leaven. Made from lactose bacteria harvested from the skins of local 'Otway Red' potatoes, it's a method dating back hundreds of years! An iconic bakery in an iconic location - don't miss it.

Our pick? It has to be the 'Great Ocean Road Scallop Pie'

HOBART:  Daci & Daci Bakers

While Hobart is known for its amazing seafood, it's not all the city has to brag about. Founded in 2011, Daci & Daci Bakers is a European-style bakehouse making fresh fig & walnut sourdough, Belgian chocolate cake and Moroccan lamb sausage rolls every day. Clearly applying an international flavour to their work, there's always plenty to choose from here. Boasting an opulent dining space for decadent breakfasts, lunches and morning and afternoon teas, why not immerse yourself in this artisanal European bakery in the heart of the Tasmanian capital.

Our pick? The Spinach, Leek & Feta Pastie.

JINDABYNE: Trader Joe's Garage - Cafe

Ok so this is technically not a bakery, but it is conveniently located right next to Discovery Parks - Jindabyne and has the best toasties and coffee on the mountain. Well-loved for its double cheeseburger and its wood-fired pizza nights, Trader Joe's Garage - Cafe is the coolest spot to warm up after a hard day out on the slopes. The Bacon and Egg Baguette with large coffee is a deal.

Our pick? The Hawaiian Burger.

ECHUCA-MOAMA: Moama Bakery

With three locations nearby, pop into any branch of the Moama Bakery for a bite to eat before embarking on your tour of the Port of Echuca. Known for their family-friendly atmosphere, Moama Bakery is the best setting for a family lunch set on the banks of the Murray River. Offering great food, great coffee and great service, we're sure you'll be raving about this place in no time!

Our pick? The Ned Kelly Pie.

WALLAROO: North Beach Kitchen

With a menu featuring blue-swimmer crab caught from the nearby Spencer Gulf, North Beach Kitchen in Wallaroo, on SA's Yorke Peninsula has quickly become a hub for anyone looking for quality food and beverage in a beachfront location. Their all-day brunch menu has become a winner amongst locals, along with their range of Five Senses coffee, guaranteeing visitors a great cup every time. GEt down to 'NBK' on your next trip to Yorkes.

SWAN VALLEY: Maison Saint-Honore

Maison Saint-Honore is a wonderful French patisserie right next to Pinelli Wines, making it the perfect place to indulge your inner foodie in truly beautiful surrounds. While touring the vineyards of the lush Swan Valley, stop by here for an afternoon tea. The macarons alone will melt your heart.

Our pick? Salted Caramel Macaron.

KARRATHA: Bakers Delight

Sourdough lovers will get themselves in a dizzy at this classic bakery. Cheese rolls that feel like 'home' and iced fruit buns that will make your children smile are in ready supply here.
