Things to See & Do

You will not be short of things to do in Port Hedland with nature all around you. Discovery Parks - Port Hedland has plenty of things to do onsite as well as events nearby that are sure to provide you with hours of fun and entertainment. With so many activities taking place throughout the year, make sure you check out the attractions below to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the action!

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Tour (7.4km)

Hop onto a guided tour of BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Nelson Point facility, the largest iron ore port in the world, and watch the bucket wheel reclaimers and ship loaders that dominate Port Hedland’s horizon and gain an understanding of how the mining industry works. BHP Billiton’s iron ore operations cover a complex integrated system of seven inland mining operations, more than 1,000km of rail, stockyards and two separate port facilities through which iron ore churns like lifeblood 24/7.

Care for Hedland

A Port Hedland based environmental association committed to connecting people with their environment. Get involved with one of their many volunteer programs - or even meet the turtles!

The Port (7.4km)

Join the Port Hedland Tour to learn about the history of the world’s largest tonnage port. 230-metre carrier vessels handle over 100 million tonnes of iron ore per year, which goes towards the building of iconic structures around the world, making it a truly unique sight. Go to the shores of Marapikurrinya Park at sunset for the best views of the movement of enormous ships and also the Dampier Salt’s towering stockpile.

Cemetery Beach (3.2km)

Reflect at Cemetery Beach with the history of hardships faced by early settlers, pearl divers and pastoral workers. Cemetery Beach hosts Port Hedland Pioneer Cemetery, providing a fascinating look into the town’s past. For a more uplifting experience, you are invited to swim, snorkel or take a guided reef walk along the 1.3km beach. There are also greased areas with barbecues and a modern playground for children.

Staircase to the Moon (On Site)

Keep the kids awake for this memory-making moment; they will thank you when they remember back to the holiday for years to come. It is a magical experience that has been made into a puppet show and storybook by a local in Broome. When the full moon rises over the shoreline at low tide, you will be treated to a truly magnificent natural wonder. Light hits the pools of water and creates the illusion of a staircase leading up to the moon. This sight is generally witnessed between the months of April and October.

Koombana Lookout (18.1km)

Put you camera into panoramic mode and take a photo of the Port Hedland skyline. The lookout is ideal for spotting marine wildlife or taking in the lights of the harbor at sunset. The Lookout also commemorates the SS Koombana, a steamship that vanished in the 1912 cyclone with 146 people aboard.

Dalgety House Museum (5.4km)

Immerse yourself in the personal memoirs of locals who detail the effect of white settlement on the Kriyarra Aboriginal people of the Pilbara. Originally built for the manager of Dalgety and Co in 1903, this charming cottage has showcased displays that tell Port Hedland’s story, including the rich history surround the pearling and pastoral trade.

The Courthouse Gallery (7.1km)

Stop in at the Courthouse Gallery for a glimpse of local and national artwork, as well as creative workshops. Peak in the store for some fashion finds that are bound to find their way back with you from your travels. Four times a year, you can also visit the Gallery’s West End Markets, where creative wares and delicious international cuisine mingle.
