Cradle Mountain Enhancement Plan

CRADLE MOUNTAIN ENHANCEMENT PLAN

Discovery Holiday Parks has submitted a proposal to the Parks and Wildlife Service to enhance the accommodation available at our Cradle Mountain property.

Understanding that members of the community may have questions about what is planned, we have developed the following Q&A.

What development is proposed for the park?

We would like to increase and improve our accommodation offering with 74 new cabins and 51 new caravanning and camping sites. The cabins will be a mixture of standard, superior and deluxe cabins, and the park will continue to provide affordable accommodation with some experiential options available for travellers seeking something extra.

We will also be building some new cabins suitable for those with mobility needs or disabilities, along with additional amenities and communal facilities to accommodate our additional camping and caravanning guests.

Increased capacity and improved quality of accommodation will mean we can offer a better experience to even more visitors to the area.

Are you planning to build on National Park / World Heritage area?

No, the land we hope to build on is adjacent to our existing property and outside of the World Heritage listed area. In fact, 80% of the development would occur on land already within our park’s footprint.

What are you doing to protect the environment and consult the community?

We are incredibly conscious of maintaining the pristine natural setting that currently exists. We have been working with a specialist environmental and cultural advisory first to ensure environmental conservation is paramount through any planned development, and that traditional landowners are consulted and engaged.

Should the development go ahead, we will consult more widely with the community and share more detail on the proposed development.

When do you expect it to be built?

If granted approval, we anticipate the development will take place over stages. More information on the timeline will be released in due course.

Will the park become more expensive after the development?

Providing affordable family accommodation will always be central to our offering and the current site and cabin rate structures will remain unchanged. However, we will have additional accommodation options that will provide different experiences for guests.

How much do you plan to invest?

The proposed total investment (made over stages) is $20m.

Will there be any employment opportunities as a result of the development?

Yes, once the planned development is complete, we anticipate our current Cradle Mountain team will expand by around 18 people. These roles will include casual, permanent part time and full-time opportunities. We are passionate about employing locals and training and developing our people. Discovery Parks has five parks in Tasmania and is a committed member of the local tourism community and employer.

Who will be doing the work?

Local contractors will be given preference for the work required as part of the development. More information will be provided about an EOI process for work to be undertaken in due course.
