HISTORY

The City of Clarence is a city and Local Government Area in Tasmania, Australia. Along with Hobart and Glenorchy, Clarence is one of the three cities that constitute the Greater Hobart Area.

The City of Clarence is located between the eastern shore of the Derwent River to the west, Pitt Water and the Coal River valley to the east, the Meehan Range to the north, and Storm Bay to the south. Being on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, it is located opposite to Hobart and Glenorchy, both of which are located on the western shore. Despite only being the 29th largest city in Australia in terms of population (52,935), it is the 9th largest city in Australia in terms of area (386 km² or 149.0 sq mi). Despite this, more than one third of the city remains untouched bushland. The administrative centre of Clarence at Rosny Park is approximately 5 kilometres from the CBD of Hobart. The City of Clarence is administered by the Clarence City Council, and is home to both the Hobart International Airport and Bellerive Oval. Rosny Park is the main commercial district in the east of Greater Hobart (featuring Eastlands Shopping Centre) and also the administrative centre of the City of Clarence.

The area that now constitutes the City of Clarence was once part of the traditional land of the Moomairemener, a sub-group of the Tasmanian Aborigines.[2] In 1803, the island of Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) was colonised by United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, who subsequently established the settlement of Hobart Town.[3] By the 1820s the settlement had spread to the 'Clarence Plains', but the area remained primarily agricultural until the mid to late 20th century, when it experienced a residential development boom. Since then Clarence has grown rapidly to become a self-sufficient city.

KANGAROO BLUFF BATTERY

Kangaroo Bluff Battery historic site, was built in the 1880s to support the Queens Battery (located at the Domain in Hobart) and the Battery Point battery in protecting Hobart from enemy ships. The guns were never fired in anger and the atmospheric location is today a popular picnic site.

The construction of a battery on the eastern shore of the Derwent was considered as early as 1840, but it took an unscheduled visit by two Russian warships 1n 1873 to stir the authorities into action. However, construction didn't begin until 1881.

Two massive cannons arrived from England in 1882. Each cannon had an overall length of 20 feet and weighed about 14 tonnes. Residents of the eastern shore celebrated the firing of the first shot on 12 February 1885.

ROSNY POINT LOOKOUT

For a spectacular panoramic view of the Derwent River and Hobart City, visit the Rosny Point Lookout. The view stretches North to Lutana and south to Opossum Bay.

The lookout is located just a short drive from the Rosny Park central business district 5 minutes from Mornington.

BELLERIVE OVAL (Blundstone Arena)

Bellerive Oval, also known by its sponsored name Blundstone Arena, is primarily a cricket and Australian Rules Football ground located in Bellerive, City of Clarence, on the eastern shore of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It is the only venue in Tasmania which currently hosts international cricket matches, and has a capacity of approximately 16,000, although a record crowd of 16,719 watched Australia play England in 2003.

It is best known as the home ground for the state cricket team, the Tasmanian Tigers, and as a venue for international Test matches since 1989 and one-day matches since 1988. Bellerive Oval underwent a $16 million re-development at very start of the 21st century and that was completed at the end of 2002. The re-development includes: state-of-the-art indoor nets, a 6,000 seat Southern Stand that contains the new television media centre, Members Area that features press and radio media areas, as well as corporate boxes and lunchrooms, members bar, TCA offices and a players area.
As well as Cricket, Bellerive Oval also plays host to Australian Football with local matches and from 2012, North Melbourne will play a couple of AFL premiership season games per year at the venue.

The Barn Market showcases jewellery, adult and children’s wares, stationary, preserves, gourmet food, accessories and home wares (to name a few) you’ll find upbeat tunes played by local musicians, hot beverages, sushi and DIY kits.
