Attractions & Activities
Recommended length of stay: 2 -3 Days
1 day - Lake Awoonga
Benaraby is a popular destination because of the world-class Barramundi hatchery developed at Lake Awoonga, situated only 10kms from the Park. Lake Awoonga is a jewel of the Bass to Barra Trail (a touring trail of nine Queensland lakes which collectively provide some of the best freshwater sport fishing opportunities and competitions in Australia) and is a must for any fishing enthusiast. Fishing is open all year round, with a limit applying only in the closed season from November to February.
You can choose to fish from your own boat or hire one lakeside from Lake Awonga Houseboats & Leisure Craft Hire. If however you prefer to utilise the expertise of a local fishing tour operator, then look no further than Johnny Mitchell from Lake Awoonga Guided Barra Fishing Charters. Johnny has over 20 years practical experience fishing for Barramundi and his specialised knowledge is sure to be useful to anyone who chooses to fish with him - refer www.fishawoonga.com.au
In addition to fishing, many other activities can be enjoyed at Lake Awoonga. Its calm waters are an ideal place to swim, sail, canoe or ski and the surrounding naturally sculpted stunning landscape is teeming with a wondrous array of plants, animals and birds, making it a great place for bushwalking, bird watching and photography. Excellent facilities are also provided at the Lake including a café, picnic shelters, barbeques, toilets, playground and landscaped walking trails.
For another perspective of beautiful Lake Awoonga, enjoy a morning tea cruise (Sundays & Wednesdays only and with a sunset cruise also available on Saturday's only) on the lady of the lake, 'Lady Helen', a lovingly restored historic 81 year old ferry. Bookings essential for all cruises - refer www.lakeawoongahouseboats.com.au
